The Pianist is an historical drama about the experiences of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a concert pianist living in Warsaw during the 1939 nazi occupation. The movie follows his survival experience in the occupied city after Germany's defeat of Poland in 1939. Polanski's family history is steeped in the holocaust, and onscreen the director reveals a profound sense of grief.
