Gangs of New York
Director: Martin Scorsese. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz. (155 min.)
Scorsese puts a new twist on the old and over-told immigrant experience flick in this sweeping historical epic. Set in New York City during the Civil War, the movie depicts the ambitious rage of a blood thirsty biggot (Daniel Day Lewis)who foments a bitter street war between American born "English" and recent European immigrants. The upside of this poorly focused, lightgly insightful and bluntly told film is its broad range of character portrayals which nicely capture the politics, and social strata of the period.
Remarkable sets, wrenching villians, Good-fellas style gore.
